Nicki Minaj’s remarkable impact on the hip-hop world extends beyond her bold lyrics and dynamic performances; it also shines through her distinctive custom-made jewelry, now being showcased at the American Museum of Natural History’s “Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry.” This exhibit, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, features iconic pieces from legends like Slick Rick, A$AP Rocky, and Notorious B.I.G., and delves into the personal style and cultural contributions of these artists, including Minaj herself.

Nicki Minaj, known for her vibrant persona and deep ties to the Barbie brand, has pushed the boundaries of hip-hop fashion with her unique jewelry pieces. One of the highlights of the exhibition is Minaj’s Barbie pendant. Crafted by jeweler Ashna Mehta, this stunning piece is set with 54.47 carats of diamonds on 18-karat gold, outlined with pink enamel, reflecting Minaj’s self-styled Barbie image. It symbolizes her empowerment message to her fans—encouraging independence and self-worth, a theme prevalent in both her music and public persona.

The exhibition not only features Minaj’s jewelry but also pieces from other contemporary artists, each telling their own story of cultural influence and artistic expression. This includes Drake’s “The Crown Jewel of Toronto” pendant and Tyler, The Creator’s intricate Bellhop Necklace, both crafted by Alex Moss and showcasing the intersection of personal narrative and city pride in their designs.

“Ice Cold” is not just an exhibition of jewelry but a celebration of hip-hop’s journey from the streets of New York to a global phenomenon that continually shapes fashion, culture, and music. The display runs through January 5, 2025, in the museum’s Melissa and Keith Meister Gallery, part of the Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals.

Through this exhibition, visitors can explore the evolution of hip-hop jewelry from the oversized gold chains of the 1970s to today’s elaborate pieces that often carry deeper meanings of success, resilience, and identity within the hip-hop community. It offers a unique lens into how artists like Nicki Minaj utilize their platform and aesthetic choices to influence not only music but also global fashion and culture.
